Our Austrian Baker - Madeleine Weber

Madeleine Weber is an Austrian girl and passionate about baking. She's particularly experienced in Austrian traditional items. She started baking at just a tender 3 years of age!

At that time, the little girl made a tray of perfect Vanillekipferl under her daddy’s careful supervision and felt excited about her ability to help her father. The feeling of achievement and pride at making something beautiful induced great pleasure in Madeleine, encouraging her to nurture and develop her baking.

The love of baking Austrian goods seems to be inherent in Madeleine’s family. Madeleine learnt baking from her father, and her father’s skills were taught by his grandmother. Even now, every time Madeleine encounters a baking problem, the first port of call is to Skype her father. “He usually knows the answer to every baking disaster!” The experience of baking connects her family over generations. For Madeleine, baking is a process of producing beauty and deliciousness, finely topped off with a spark of creativity. So rather than simply focusing on the results, she enjoys the whole process of baking from start to finish.

Of course, like any learning process, Madeleine had a fair few failures with an unfavourable outcome, whether it be a presentation mishap or inedible disaster. She would become angry about the time consuming nature of baking, not to mention the waste of ingredients when the final product wasn't to her liking. But these failures never defeated her resolve, and she consequently came back much stronger. Madeleine's inherent love of baking always shone through during those negative moods, where she immersed herself in the mentality that every failure would lead to consistent improvement.

“I can tell you now”, Madeleine smiled and shared a brief remark about Nutella cake (like a Sacher cake, but use Nutella instead of jam) with us, “I thought Marmite was another version of Nutella and used that instead.” Although the inedible cake depressed, it has become an amusing memory from her past.

"I guess most bakers have a sweet-tooth", and so does Madeleine. She admits that she’s a huge fan of dessert. “I barely have a meal without a dessert to finish it.” As an Austrian, Austrian desserts represent all her sweetest memories. She recalled that when she was little, they were rewards she got for high marks or achieving something good. Upon leaving her hometown to live in Cardiff, she never fully appreciated how important Austrian desserts were to her life, until they were taken away from her. "I love the desserts because the textures and flavours are unique".

Madeleine wants to share her cakes, joy and love of Austrian desserts to everybody. Giving you the opportunity to sample, and hopefully enjoy that authentic Austrian taste.
